Positively Negative

Defund the police was always an incredibly stupid phrase. Restructure the system and restructure the police is a much wiser phrase and a much wiser course of action. The whole “get tough on crime” movement which was so popular decades ago has only generated more and more crime as money was funneled away from the programs which would prevent crime from even happening in the first place.

This of course, resulted in an increase in crime. Which meant we needed more police. Which meant we needed to take more money away from the programs which would have prevented the crime in the first place. Which… It is an endless positive feedback spiral.

It is as if a doctor said, “We could cure the disease, but wouldn’t it be better to endlessly treat the symptoms and never actually address the cause? This will cause the symptoms to multiply but think of all the money that will be going to hospitals, treatments, and other medical care!”

>Chicago can’t keep giving 40 percent of its operations budget to a system of punishment that does nothing to address root problems.

...We now spend almost $5 million on policing every day. That’s the equivalent of what the city spends on five months of mental health services ($9.4 million per year), 18 months of substance abuse treatment ($2.6 million per year), or 32 months of violence prevention programs ($1.5 million per year).<
